Pavement markings are primarily related to safety and order, but they can also help satisfy legal requirements and enhance a property’s aesthetics. Although there are many types available, effective pavement markings should share certain qualities.
To be effective, pavement markings must be clearly visible, so they should be repainted if their original visibility declines by 25% or more. They should be visible at night or when the pavement is wet, which can be accomplished by pressing reflective beads into the wet paint, installing reflectors in the pavement, or using special paints. Pavement markings should not contain lengthy messages; widely recognized symbols are preferable, accompanied by just one or two words if text is necessary. Markings should be located properly to allow drivers time to react.
In parking lots, some common pavement markings are traffic arrows to indicate the direction of travel, stencils to identify spaces reserved for the handicapped, pedestrian crosswalks, diagonal stripes to indicate no-parking zones, painted curbs to denote fire lanes, and words to warn of stops, cross traffic, and speed bumps. On streets, centerlines, crosswalks, edge lines, traffic arrows, and lane indicators are common. Centerlines and lane indicators can also be found in some parking lots. Other markings that may be used on various pavements include lines and symbols to denote bike lanes, bus stops and bus lanes, school zones, railroad tracks, and merging traffic. Some cities use pavement markings to warn drivers that there is a fire station in the vicinity, denote a hospital zone, or warn that a stretch of pavement is especially slippery when wet.
The longevity of pavement markings will depend on several factors, including the type of paint used, the traffic volume and type, and the weather. Typically, pavement markings should be repainted every two to three years.
