Asphalt Milling Services in Orange County

Milling is a technique that uses a milling machine to remove asphalt pavement, essentially grinding it away for easy removal and recycling. Milling machines can be precisely calibrated to remove less than an inch of pavement or the full depth of the pavement.

When Is Asphalt Milling Commonly Used?

One extremely common use of milling is to prepare an asphalt pavement for an overlay by removing the exact depth of pavement that will be replaced by the overlay. Milling machines are also frequently used to ensure smooth transitions between adjacent pavements. Milling can sometimes solve problems with surface drainage, especially when the issue involves minor depressions that are allowing water to collect. A milling machine can create rumble strips on a new or existing pavement, remove an entire pavement to prepare for a reconstruction, or level an uneven surface. Sometimes, milling can be used as part of a procedure to address raveling, rutting, or shoving.

What Are the Benefits of Milling?

Milling allows the retention of the pavement’s grade and slope, curb reveals, gutters, and storm drains. The procedure can be repeated as often as needed on the same area, and there is typically little disruption to traffic. Milling machines are available in numerous sizes, so some are small enough for a tennis court, and others are powerful enough to handle a massive parking lot. Milling is an economical, fast way to remove as much or as little of an existing asphalt pavement as the job requires.

How Does a Milling Machine Work?

Milling machines have rotating drums that hold carbide cutters. As the drum rotates, the affixed cutters grind the pavement into small pieces. Normally, water is used to keep the drum cool and reduce the dust generated by the procedure. The milled particles move to an attached conveyor belt; this belt usually transfers the particles to a truck for removal from the site. In most cases, the milled pavement is sent to a batch plant for recycling, but the particles may also be recycled on the site or saved for later use. Because the asphalt removed by the machine is completely recyclable, milling can be considered environmentally friendly.
