Marking Removal Services in Orange County

Early parking lot and road marking contractors were often faced with a quandary. Pavement markings had to be durable enough to provide visible guidance while they were needed, but they needed to be removed or obliterated once they were no longer required. Over the years, many different removal methods were developed. Some were highly destructive to the underlying pavement, while others were so ineffective that they were not worth the time, expense, and inconvenience. Fortunately, modern techniques and tools have been developed to make marking removal faster, less damaging, and more effective.

Why Would I Need Markings Removed?

There are many reasons that you might need to have pavement markings removed. Perhaps you applied temporary markings that are no longer valid. Maybe you need to make changes to your parking lot layout, including turning a travel aisle from one-way to two-way traffic, relocating handicapped parking spaces, or changing the angle of your parking spaces. Perhaps you are making changes to the streets controlled by your HOA, including modifying turn-only lanes, widening certain roads, or altering the flow of traffic through your community. If you do not remove the existing markings, you can be left with a condition known as ghost markings. Especially at night or on dark pavements, these ghost markings can make it extremely difficult for drivers to identify which set of markings they should follow.

How Are Pavement Markings Removed?

There are several methods that can be used to remove pavement markings. The type of existing markings, the type and condition of the pavement, and the scope of the project can affect the decision on which method is best.

• Grinding is the most cost-efficient and fastest method of removal, especially if markings will be applied in the same spots. When the right grinder is used by a skilled operator, damage to the pavement can be minimized. Grinders can remove a wide variety of marking materials, including thermoplastics, epoxy coatings, and paints.
• Chemicals can be used effectively on concrete and asphalt pavements. However, this method can take longer and may be more expensive.
• Waterblasting uses sharp, fine jets of water to pulverize the markings. However, although this typically results in the least scarring, it is not suitable for all applications, and it is typically more expensive and slower than grinding.
• Sandblasting uses sand as an abrasive to remove pavement markings. Because the technique uses so little water, it is often chosen to remove interior markings.
• Shot blasting is often a cost-effective option for removing markings inside warehouses and on concrete pavements. Shot blasting can also remove many types of stains.
