What Is the History of Orange?

Although the area had been home to indigenous tribes for centuries, the written history of Orange dates to the late 1700s and the arrival of Spanish expeditions. The first Spanish land grant was issued in 1801, and other grants were soon issued. The United States acquired the region after the Mexican-American War in 1848. By 1864, a community named Richland had developed. However, when the town applied for a post office in 1873, the existence of another town by the same name in Sacramento County led to the rejection of the application. Residents submitted another application with the name of Orange, and this application was approved. The town was officially incorporated in 1888, and it had a population of around 800 at the time. Agriculture was the backbone of the town’s economy from the late 19th century and most of the 20th century. In 1950, the population exceeded 10,000 for the first time. By 1960, the population had more than doubled to 26.444, then almost tripled to 77,365 by 1970. Since then, the population has been steadily increasing, but the rate has been slower.
