Asphalt Maintenance Planning, What's Next

Asphalt Maintenance Planning – What’s Next?

July 18, 2023/0 Comments/in faq /by gradepave

Asphalt Maintenance Planning, What's Next Adding fresh asphalt pavement to your property enhances curb appeal and creates a safe place for people to walk and drive. Planning your initial paving project involved a lot of hard work that finally paid off, but now you may be wondering what to do now. New asphalt maintenance planning is easy when you lean on the support of experienced contractors. You can also use this guide to begin planning maintenance while waiting for the asphalt to cure.

What Types of Regular Asphalt Maintenance Are Required?

One of the first service that an Orange County asphalt maintenance company will suggest is sealcoating. After you’ve sealed the surface of your parking lot, you’ll then be ready to plan for these other essential maintenance services.

•Parking Lot Striping and Re-Striping
•Parking Lot Cleaning
•Crack Sealing
•Crack Repairs
•Traffic Signage Updates
•Concrete Repairs

How Often Should You Plan for Sealcoating?

Sealcoating is your first line of defense against oxidation and damage from corrosive substances. You’ll first need to wait for the asphalt to cure before applying the sealcoat. Once the pavement is installed, ask your asphalt maintenance contractor to help you plan for the first sealcoating service. They can help you identify the appropriate schedule for reapplying the sealant in future years. Although schedules vary, most property owners must plan for sealcoating every two to three years after the original application.

When Should You Plan for Other Asphalt Maintenance Services?

Daily maintenance for asphalt includes removing surface debris, and you may need to plan for power washing to remove deeper stains that set in over time. You can also perform a daily inspection during the cleanings, and scheduling annual inspections with a paving contractor helps you identify subtle signs of damage before they become more significant problems.

Most property owners do major crack repair work between sealcoating services. But you’ll need to plan to re-stripe after the sealant is applied. On most properties, pavement markings can last a few years before they must be redone, and traffic signage can be updated as required. Watching for signs of damage lets you know when you need to schedule services moving from maintenance to repairs, such as milling and overlays.

Can Asphalt Paving Improve Your Property Value?

Can Asphalt Paving Improve Your Property Value?

June 6, 2023/0 Comments/in faq /by gradepave

Can Asphalt Paving Improve Your Property Value? Most commercial real estate increases in value over time, but property owners can also do their part to give those numbers a boost. Not only will a higher value help you sell your property when you are ready, but it can also help you to achieve other goals. Both tenants and customers tend to want to do business with companies that demonstrate care by maintaining the curb appeal of their property. Understanding how asphalt paving influences your property value helps you start planning how to care of the exterior of one of your biggest investments.

What Factors Influence How Much Asphalt Paving Raises Your Property Value?

The size of a parking lot can make a big impact on your property value, and you’ll want to work with a paving contractor in Orange County to plan how big to make your new paving project. Generally, you’ll want a lot that has enough space for your customers to park and drive safely along with the appropriate signage and markings to stay ADA and fire code compliant.

Orange County asphalt paving should also be clean and free of visible cracks and potholes to achieve the highest possible value for your property. You should also be able to clearly see the parking lot striping and markings, and these should not have any chips or flaking that mar their appearance.

How Should You Maintain Asphalt Paving?

As a property owner, it is common to be unsure of when it is necessary to contact an asphalt paving company for services. Here is a general outline of common types of asphalt maintenance services that you’ll want to plan for that help to improve property values.
•Sealcoating – every one to two years
•Asphalt crack repairs – as needed
•Asphalt parking lot striping – after sealcoating or when the visibility is reduced
•Asphalt paving overlay – when a large portion of the asphalt is damaged

How Does the Contractor Your Choose Influence the Benefits?

Asphalt paving companies vary regarding their level of expertise, and even the equipment and techniques they use can make or break your property value. If an asphalt paving company cuts corners, then you could see the pavement deteriorate within a rapid period of time.

Even with long-lasting services, the property value could go down if the pavement is left with bumps or poorly painted parking lot striping. Working with a local Orange County asphalt paving company gives you the benefit of seeing their work in real life while also knowing that they know how to care for pavement that is exposed to our California climate.

5 Tips For A Successful Asphalt Paving Project

5 Tips For A Successful Asphalt Paving Project

May 8, 2023/0 Comments/in faq /by gradepave

Asphalt paving is a fast and cost-effective way to create a smooth surface for parking lots, driveways, roads and more that is ready for traffic within a short period of time. A carefully planned asphalt pavement project should result in a beautiful surface that last for decades with proper maintenance. But, working with a poorly run company can leave you with less than stellar results. Asking these five questions helps you make sure that you follow the best course of action to achieve a successful paving project.

Do You Have Defined Goals for Your Asphalt Paving Project?

You obviously need asphalt pavement to create a smooth surface for drivers, bikers and pedestrians, but have you taken a moment to think about your other goals? You might be choosing to put in a parking lot to create more space for your company’s customers. Or, your paving project might be part of your plan to boost the value of your property before you sell. Sharing your goals with the contractor helps them create a plan that matches your needs.

Did You Thoroughly Vet the Asphalt Paving Company You Chose?

When it comes to Orange County asphalt paving, the company you hire has everything to do with the success of a project. Getting quotes is a great place to start with getting to know a paving contractor, but this isn’t all that you need to know about hiring a crew. You’ll also want to make sure that the contractors you hire have a strong reputation for doing quality work in the community.

Have You Made Sure the Asphalt Paving Site Has Good Drainage?

Orange County commercial paving can quickly become a problem when there is poor drainage. Before your paving company puts down the asphalt, you’ll want to check with them to see if there are any plans for creating proper drainage to prevent pooling. A reputable contractor will already be thinking about making sure that water runs smoothly away from the pavement when it rains.

Do You Have a Firm Understanding of the Contractor’s Plans?

Asphalt paving services can include a wide range of materials and techniques, which is why you’ll want to carefully check every detail of a quote. Once you’ve found the right company, they should be able to tell you how and why they might choose to make the pavement a certain depth or to use a specific type of asphalt mix. Companies that take a customized approach to each project tend to have higher success rates.

Do You Know How to Communicate With Your Asphalt Paving Company In Orange County?

Depending upon the size of your paving project, you could be working with a company over a period of several days or weeks. Lots of things can change during that time, and you need to know that your contractor will reach out to you if there is a delay and that you can contact them with questions. Finding a company that uses multiple communication methods is a sure sign that they care about customer satisfaction.

What Is FORTA-FI Asphalt?

What Is FORTA-FI Asphalt?

March 28, 2022/0 Comments/in faq /by gradepave

What Is FORTA-FI Asphalt? For years, the asphalt industry has known that reinforcing fibers in an asphalt mix could be beneficial, but quantifying the benefits has been problematic until recently. FORTA-FI is a blend of synthetic fibers that is formulated for use in both rehabilitation and new construction projects, and recent research has shed new light on the benefits of FORTA-FI asphalt.

What Are the Benefits of FORTA-FI Asphalt?

FORTA-FI can help customers save money in two different ways. First, it can reduce initial costs by allowing the pavement to be designed with a thinner thickness of asphalt without sacrificing the durability of the pavement. Depending on the project, asphalt thickness can be reduced by as much as 35%. Second, if used in conjunction with a conventional asphalt thickness, it can extend the life of the pavement by 50% or more by reducing fatigue cracking, raveling, rutting, and reflective cracking, which can also help reduce the frequency and cost of repairs.

What Are the Appropriate Uses of FORTA-FI Asphalt?

FORTA-FI is formulated to provide reinforcement regardless of the working temperature of the mix. Therefore, it can be used in hot mix asphalt, cold patch mixes, warm mix asphalt, and hot patch mixes. FORTA-FI increases the tensile strength of asphalt; tensile strength is a measurement of how much stress a material will be able to withstand when it is being pulled or stretched before it breaks. Tensile strength is not the same as compressive strength, but both measurements can be applied to any material. FORTA-FI also increases the asphalt’s resilient modulus, which is an estimate of its elasticity, and its Marshall stability, which is related to the asphalt’s ability to resist distortion, displacement, and shearing stresses. These enhancements make fortified asphalt an ideal choice for any pavement that will regularly support heavy loads, including airport runways and truck stops.

Is FORTA-FI the Same as Asphalt Fabric?

No, asphalt fabric and FORTA-FI are very different. Since FORTA-FI is incorporated into the asphalt mix, it strengthens the pavement in all three dimensions. Asphalt fabric is basically a mat that is usually applied over an existing pavement during the installation of an asphalt overlay. They hold the tack coat that is used to enhance bonding, and they can help reduce reflective cracking and moisture penetration. Asphalt fabric and FORTA-FI typically have similar costs, but FORTA-FI can reduce construction costs and time since the fibers can be added at the production plant.

Asphalt Sealcoating: The Common Failures and Causes

Asphalt Sealcoating: The Common Failures and Causes

March 27, 2022/0 Comments/in faq /by gradepave

Asphalt Sealcoating: The Common Failures and CausesIf you have an asphalt pavement, there is no better way to give it a longer life with fewer expensive repairs than applying asphalt sealcoating every two or three years. However, if the sealant flakes off, cracks, peels away, or fails to bond, your pavement will not be receiving the protection that it deserves. These common failures can be caused by a variety of factors, including application errors, pavement preparation, and weather conditions.

What Application Errors Can Cause Asphalt Sealcoating to Fail Prematurely?

Sealcoating should always be applied in thin coats, and each coat should be allowed to dry before the next one is applied. Some novice or unscrupulous asphalt maintenance contractors will try to speed things up by applying one thick coat of sealant instead. It is highly unlikely that a thick coat will cure properly. Furthermore, asphalt sealcoating contractors must prepare the sealant correctly for the application. If they do not, the sealant may be unable to create a strong bond with the pavement, or it may be too thin to serve any useful purpose.

How Does the Preparation of an Asphalt Pavement Impact the Success of a Sealcoating Job?

Whether they are painting houses or sealcoating parking lot pavements, experienced professionals know that they must prepare the surface first. When performing asphalt sealcoating Orange County contractors know that they need to ensure that the pavement has been adequately prepared.

• The pavement must be as clean as possible so that there is nothing to interfere with the establishment of a strong bond. This means that there cannot be loose gravel, dirt, dead leaves, trash, or any other debris that will come between the sealant and the pavement.
• Oil and other vehicle fluids need to be thoroughly cleaned. In some cases, these spots may need to have a primer applied prior to sealing.
• Potholes, alligatored asphalt, and other damage must be repaired before the sealant can be applied. Many parking lot maintenance companies that offer asphalt sealing also offer crack repairs and asphalt patching, so you might want to consider choosing a contractor who can provide you with all the services you will need.
• High-traffic areas can sometimes suffer from a condition known as aggregate polishing. Sealants cannot bond to smooth, exposed stones or rocks, so these areas will typically need a primer applied first.
• A new pavement needs to be sufficiently cured prior to sealing. Otherwise, the asphalt will contain too much oil to allow bonding to occur. Typically, a parking lot paving company in Orange County will recommend waiting for at least three months before sealing a new pavement. In some cases, the waiting time could be longer, but it should not exceed 12 months. Asphalt sealcoating contractors must know how to determine whether the pavement is ready to be sealed if the application is to be successful.

How Do Weather Conditions Affect Asphalt Sealcoating?

The weather can sometimes make asphalt sealcoating Orange County pavements tricky. Sealants cure faster when the temperature is above 65 degrees Fahrenheit, the humidity is below 50%, the skies are not overcast, and the wind is light and steady. If the temperature is below 50 degrees, or if there is a heavy cloud cover, curing will take longer, and there is a possibility that the sealant will never cure properly. Furthermore, any rain that falls within 24 hours of the application could cause the sealant to fail.

What Is The Process For Asphalt Paving Construction?

What Is the Process for Asphalt Paving Construction?

March 25, 2022/0 Comments/in faq /by gradepave

What Is The Process For Asphalt Paving Construction?Experienced professionals can make difficult tasks seem easy. For example, if you have ever watched a highly experienced truck driver back a trailer up to a loading dock in between two other semis on the first try, you might not realize everything that goes into this feat. Similarly, if you have ever watched an experienced, well-trained crew install asphalt paving, you might not realize all the steps that are required to construct the pavement.

When Constructing Paving, What Are the Initial Steps?

An Orange County commercial paving contractor will typically start by asking several questions. How will the pavement be used? In other words, how many vehicles are expected to drive on the pavement on an average day? What percentage of these vehicles will be heavyweight trucks or heavy equipment? Parking lot paving contractors will ask how long vehicles, especially heavy ones, will remain parked on your pavement, and they may also ask how often your waste management company will empty your dumpster.

If you operate a logistics center or manufacturing facility, your paving company will want to know how many trucks will be arriving and departing from your loading docks during a normal 24-hour period. If your existing pavement failed prematurely, your contractor will want to determine the cause of the failure. Correcting the cause can help prevent another premature failure, but it may require additional asphalt paving services. Potentially, these additional services could involve addressing drainage issues, problems with runoff from the surrounding terrain, or issues with your current schedule for routine asphalt maintenance.

What Are the Intermediate Steps When Installing Asphalt Paving?

The intermediate steps revolve around engineering, planning, and scheduling. Every pavement must be engineered to support whatever traffic is expected to have access to the pavement. This means that the depth of the asphalt, the slope of the pavement, the depth of the aggregate foundation, and the number and location of storm drains, swales, or catch basins must be considered. Next, your Orange County commercial paving contractor will create a preliminary schedule to ensure that the machinery, staff, and tools will be available when needed. The schedule will also include the timing of deliveries from the batch plant.

What Are the Final Steps When Constructing an Asphalt Pavement?

Typically, the final countdown begins when an asphalt paving company clears the site to get it ready for the new construction. Whether the site has been previously developed or is raw land, there will almost always be obstacles that require removal. These may be an existing pavement, trees, existing buildings, or fences. Once the land has been cleared, the paving company will establish the pavement’s boundaries. The soil will be compacted; if the soil is insufficient, the contractor may need to amend it first. If the engineering plans call for an aggregate base, the contractor will install it. Finally, the contractor will place and compact multiple layers of asphalt until the specified depth has been reached.

Asphalt Repairs: Why Waiting Can Be Expensive!

Asphalt Repairs: Why Waiting Can Be Expensive

February 27, 2022/0 Comments/in faq /by gradepave

Asphalt Repairs: Why Waiting Can Be Expensive! No pavement can remain in pristine condition forever, and an asphalt pavement is no exception. Sooner or later, you will begin to notice signs of deterioration or damage. This is perfectly normal and to be expected. What is critical, however, is what you do when you need asphalt repairs. Delaying essential repairs can end up costing you a boatload of money in ways that you might not expect.

What Do Paving Professionals Classify as Asphalt Repairs?

Although every experienced parking lot paving contractor understands the meaning and various names of all the different procedures, there is less consensus when it comes to classifying them as repairs, routine maintenance, or paving. For example, some contractors consider asphalt resurfacing as an asphalt paving procedure, but other contractors classify it as parking lot maintenance & repair. To simplify matters, the following list consists of asphalt repair procedures to correct problems that can impact the safety or structural integrity of a pavement.

• Pot hole repair typically requires a technique known as asphalt patching to rebuild the hollowed-out pavement.
• Asphalt patching can also be used to repair areas that are suffering from alligator cracking.
• An Orange County asphalt repair contractor may sometimes install an overlay to mend damage that is too extensive to make patching cost-effective, but which is not extensive enough to justify resurfacing the entire pavement.
• Crack repairs are usually considered as maintenance procedures by asphalt paving Orange County professionals. However, they are included on this list because cracks are almost always the starting point for alligator cracking, potholes, and other severe damage.

What Are the Potential Financial Repercussions of Neglecting Repairs?

There are quite a number of ways that deferring your asphalt repair could potentially impact your finances. Here are four of the most common ways that you could experience financial repercussions.

1. Your pavement will suffer increasingly severe damage that will be much more expensive to repair in the long run. If you neglect repairs long enough, your pavement could have its useful life drastically reduced, so a parking lot that should have lasted 25 or 30 years, for example, could require a complete replacement in 10 or 12 years.
2. You could be cited for failure to comply with accessibility regulations. The Americans with Disabilities Act includes stringent requirements for pavements in accessible parking spaces, along accessible paths, and at accessible entrances. Large cracks, potholes, soft spots, and depressions could conceivably be construed as obstacles for people with mobility issues.
3. You could face lawsuits, insurance claims, or fines if anyone damages their vehicles or suffers an injury on your property. Employees, customers, delivery drivers, tenants and their customers or employees, service technicians, and virtually any visitor could potentially hold you responsible for their medical bills, lost wages, property damage, or other costs.
4. You could lose customers or tenants. Whether you manage a restaurant, an apartment complex, a shopping center or retail store, or an office park, your income could decline if people fear that your pavements pose risks to themselves or their vehicles.

Whether you need asphalt paving, concrete installation, concrete repair, parking lot striping, sealcoating, bollards, warehouse striping, asphalt resurfacing, pavement markings, shot blasting, traffic signage, ADA compliance assistance, asphalt milling, line removal, pot hole repair, or asphalt patching, you can count on Peterson Grading & Paving for help. We are an experienced Orange County paving company with an exemplary reputation and impeccable references. We serve clients in Anaheim, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Orange, Santa Ana, and other communities in the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Ventura. What Orange County Property Managers Need to Know about asphalt paving

What OC Property Managers Need to Know About Asphalt Paving

February 26, 2022/0 Comments/in faq /by gradepave

What Orange County Property Managers Need to Know about asphalt pavingOrange County residents are justifiably proud of their communities, so you probably go to great lengths to ensure that the property you manage makes a favorable impression on everyone who sees it. You maintain your landscaping, ensure that your parking lot has visible stripes and markings, install asphalt paving, repaint the exteriors of your structures periodically, and oversee dozens of other tasks to establish or maintain your company’s image.

What Are the Things Property Managers Should Understand About Asphalt Paving?

Although property managers are multitaskers who must know quite a bit about many different things, no one can know everything about everything. Here are x things that you might not know about Orange County asphalt paving.

1. Asphalt is an eco-friendly paving material.
2. An asphalt paving company will need very little time to construct your new pavement.
3. Your new pavement could last for many decades.
4. The asphalt paving services you need to repair, maintain, or renovate your pavement are typically quite economical.
5. Not every asphalt company offers identical services.
6. Your Orange County paving company may offer many services besides new construction.

Additional information about the above six topics can be found in the following sections.

Why Is Paving Eco-Friendly?

Asphalt does not leach harmful elements into the water or soil. In fact, asphalt is so safe that it is used to line public drinking water reservoirs, fish hatcheries, and hazardous waste disposal sites. By tonnage, asphalt pavement is the most recycled material in North America. Furthermore, the industry adopted voluntary standards several decades ago that have reduced pollution from asphalt production plants so much that these plants exceed the standards created by the Environmental Protection Agency.

How Long Does an Asphalt Company Need to Install a New Pavement?

The construction time will depend on many factors, including the size of the pavement to be constructed, the work that needs to be done to prepare the site, and the type of pavement to be built. To give you some idea of the timeframe, a parking lot paving company may take anywhere from two weeks to one month to complete preliminary preparations, install the asphalt, allow sufficient time for the fresh asphalt to cure, and stripe and mark the parking lot. The parking lot can typically begin receiving traffic within one or two days.

Is It True That Asphalt Paving Can Last for Decades?

If you give your asphalt pavement the attention it needs, your new pavement could deliver a useful life of 30 years or more. You would need to be proactive about preventive maintenance and repairs, and you might need to resurface the pavement every 12 to 15 years.

What Asphalt Paving Services Are Needed to Repair, Maintain, or Renovate a Pavement?

The repair service that is needed the most often is asphalt crack repair. Another popular repair method is asphalt patching to repair potholes. Having your paving company locate and repair cracks every six months can reduce or even eliminate your need for pothole repairs. To protect your pavement, a routine maintenance procedure known as sealcoating is an effective method of blocking UV rays and reducing the risks of damage from other sources. When you need to renovate an aging pavement, an asphalt overlay can often deliver nearly identical results at a much cheaper cost than removing and reconstructing an existing pavement.

Why Do Some Orange County Asphalt Paving Companies Offer Different Services?

There can be many reasons why one paving company does not offer the same services as another. For example, the machines needed can be very expensive, and some of them are highly specialized, so not every asphalt company can justify or afford the cost. A second reason is that it is not always easy to find skilled workers with the experience needed to perform certain tasks. Lastly, some contractors simply prefer to focus all of their attention on a narrow range of services because of financial limitations, a scarcity of trained workers in their area, or simply their personal preference.

Can a Paving Company Also Offer Asphalt Repair and Preventive Maintenance Services?

Yes, they can, and Peterson Grading & Paving is an example of a paving company that offers an extensive range of services, including asphalt overlays and paving, asphalt sealcoating, concrete paving, asphalt crack repair, bollard installations, asphalt milling, concrete paving, warehouse striping, parking lot striping, marking removal, shot blasting, and parking lot signage. We serve clients throughout Orange, Los Angeles, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura counties, including those in the towns of Anaheim, Santa Ana, Irvine, Huntington Beach, Garden Grove, Fullerton, and Orange. We have an unblemished reputation for exemplary customer service and exceptional craftsmanship. Asphalt Overlays: What Is Edge Milling?

Asphalt Overlays: What Is Edge Milling?

January 30, 2022/0 Comments/in faq /by gradepave

Asphalt Overlays: What Is Edge Milling?Asphalt pavements can survive decades of use if given adequate care, but they are not eternal. At some point, you are bound to discover that numerous repairs, intermittent maintenance, or exposure to the elements may have left your pavement looking unattractive or presenting safety risks. When you do, your first thought may be that it is time to have a paving contractor tear out your old, tired pavement and reconstruct it. Before you do, you might want to consider a speedier, more economical option that can provide you with a resurfaced pavement that few people will be able to differentiate from a new one. Asphalt overlays can be an ideal solution for many structurally sound pavements that just need a surface rejuvenation.

What Are Asphalt Overlays?

An asphalt overlay is a layer of asphalt paving that is installed as part of a pavement resurfacing project. Although overlays are more commonly applied to asphalt pavements, some concrete pavements are also suitable for overlaying. Interstate highways, residential driveways, urban and suburban thoroughfares, and parking lots are just some of the types of pavements on which commercial paving contractors can install an overlay.

What Is the Connection Between Asphalt Overlays and Edge Milling?

Typically, when overlaying asphalt paving Orange County contractors use milling machines to remove the existing pavement to a depth equal to the thickness of the overlay, which is usually around three inches. Edge milling ensures that curb reveals, gutters, transitions, drain grates, and other features remain at their correct heights in relation to the surface of the pavement. Without edge milling, these features would be recessed, making for a rough ride and posing potential tripping hazards. In addition, transitions and curb ramps would likely fail to comply with the regulations contained in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

What Are the Requirements for a Successful Asphalt Overlay Installation?

In theory, an asphalt contractor could place an overlay on virtually any pavement, but the results would be short-lived, unsightly, or both unless certain requirements are met. One is that the pavement has a relatively stable and strong foundation. Another requirement for pavement resurfacing success is that any necessary repairs to the pavement are completed first. If the pavement has suffered unusually rapid damage or premature deterioration, the cause should be identified to prevent the damage from happening to the overlay. If pavement or foundation damage is extensive, reconstruction may be more cost-effective than resurfacing. Typically, a parking lot paving contractor, for example, will recommend rebuilding the pavement instead of overlaying it if the damage affects more than about 30% of the pavement’s total square footage.

Asphalt Paving: What Is the Recommended Thickness?

Asphalt Paving : What is the Recommended ThicknessWhen you are planning a backyard cookout for 30 guests, you may wonder how much food you need to buy. You want to buy enough so that no one goes hungry, but you do not want to buy so much that you waste money on food that will end up in the garbage or compost pile. Getting it right requires you to answer a variety of questions. What is on your menu? Are most of your guests adult bodybuilders, kindergarteners, senior citizens, or a mixture of all ages? Do you need to provide a variety of dishes to meet special dietary preferences or requirements? Determining the correct thickness of asphalt paving is a little like deciding how much food to buy for your cookout. It depends on what and who you will be serving.

What and Who Will Your Asphalt Paving Serve?

Do you want your asphalt paving company to build a residential driveway to serve three passenger vehicles? An asphalt depth of two or three inches may be enough, but you probably want a thicker pavement if you will also be parking your RV on it. Do you want to build a parking lot that will serve a combination of passenger vehicles and 18-wheelers? You probably need at least five inches of asphalt, and you may need as much as seven or eight inches. Are you building a lot that will be dedicated to your employees? Most parking lot paving contractors will recommend an asphalt depth of four to six inches. Are you having your asphalt paving company install an overlay? The thickness will typically be between two and three inches. Is your new pavement going to be used exclusively by pedestrians? You may not need a thickness of more than two inches or so.

Does the Depth of the Base Layer Affect the Thickness of Asphalt Paving?

Although it is possible to install asphalt on a soil subgrade, most asphalt paving OC utilizes an aggregate base beneath the asphalt layers. The rule of thumb is that you can decrease the asphalt thickness by one inch for every three inches of base thickness. However, there are exceptions, most of which involve the stability of the ground on which the pavement is to be installed. Therefore, site and soil evaluations are critical when performing Orange County paving services.

If the Company Providing My Asphalt Paving Services Gets the Asphalt Thickness Wrong, What Will Happen?

It depends on whether your paving company makes the asphalt layers too thick or too thin. If they make it too thick, you will be spending more than you should, and it is also a waste of natural resources. If they make it too thin, you need to be prepared to budget extra funds for your paving maintenance and repairs. You will start to see signs of pavement distress during your pavement’s early life, including cracks, potholes, and alligatored asphalt. Even the best parking lot maintenance will not completely offset the premature demise of your pavement. However, this does not mean that you should neglect your routine paving maintenance. Sealcoating, crack filling or sealing, and asphalt patching can help you delay the expense of reconstructing your pavement, but you would need to consult your asphalt paving company for an estimate of how much time you can buy through effective paving maintenance.
