Asphalt Overlay Services in Orange County

Paved roads, parking lots, and runways have contributed a great deal to the growth of the American economy. To illustrate, in 1919, a military convoy struggled for 62 days to travel from Washington D.C. to San Francisco. Although there were issues with the reliability of the vehicles, most of the delays came from the lack of paved roads west of Indiana. A young Army officer who accompanied the convoy never forgot the hardships encountered on the trip. His name was Dwight D. Eisenhower, and his experiences led him to lobby heavily for a system of interstate highways to link the nation. Interestingly, many concrete sections of the interstates built during the 1950s and 1960s now feature asphalt overlays.

What Are Asphalt Overlays?

An overlay is one or more layers of asphalt applied to the top of an existing asphalt or concrete pavement. Typically, a properly installed overlay will be virtually indistinguishable from a new asphalt pavement in appearance and will be similar in functionality. However, the cost of an overlay is substantially less than a new pavement.

Can an Asphalt Contractor Install an Overlay on Any Pavement?

Technically, it might be possible to install an overlay on any pavement, but it might be a decision that would end up costing a great deal more than simply rebuilding the pavement. To be cost-effective, an overlay should be installed on a pavement with a stable foundation, and serious pavement damage should be repaired first. Typically, if less than about a third of the pavement or its foundation requires extensive repair, an overlay might be a cost-effective option. However, the contractor must also determine the reason for the damage and address it to prevent the premature failure of the overlay.

How Is an Asphalt Overlay Installed?

The specifics of an overlay installation can vary, so only your contractor can explain the steps involved in your particular project. However, the process normally begins with crack and pothole repairs. Small areas of alligator cracking or rutting may need to be repaired if the existing pavement is asphalt, and milling may be performed to address low spots in the pavement. The contractor will clean the pavement thoroughly, and a tack coat will normally be applied to ensure a strong bond between the pavement and the new asphalt. The final step will be to install the asphalt to achieve the desired thickness.
