Asphalt Crack Repair Services in Orange County

Experienced asphalt contractors know that well-maintained pavements will have longer lives and require fewer costly repairs. Without a doubt, the most important procedure you can have your contractor perform is the timely repair of asphalt crack repair.

Why Is Asphalt Crack Repair Critical?

If you have ever seen an abandoned building that has collapsed, it is safe to assume that the problem likely started with a roof leak. A little water entered, the leak got worse, and more water entered. The structural supports rotted and gave way, and the roof caved in, quickly followed by the collapse of the walls and floors. Think of a crack in your asphalt pavement as that first minor leak. Water enters through the crack, works its way throughout the pavement, and eventually destroys the foundation supporting your pavement. The structural damage to your pavement manifests as potholes, alligator cracking, subsidence, and a host of other problems. Your pavement could require a total reconstruction in less than 10 years, but even if it is salvageable, you can expect to encounter increasingly costly and more frequent repairs for whatever time you manage to delay the reconstruction.

When Should My Asphalt Contractor Repair Cracks?

The best approach is to ask your contractor to assess your pavement every autumn and every spring so that repairs can be made promptly if any significant cracks are found. Most contractors consider significant cracks to be those that are more than approximately a half an inch wide or deep. Your contractor should also examine any previously repaired cracks to make sure that they are still watertight. If the repair material has cracked or lost its bond with the pavement, the crack should be repaired even if it does not meet the definition of a significant crack.

How Do Contractors Repair Cracks in Asphalt Pavements?

The first step is to clean out the crack to remove any dirt, vegetation, or trash that has entered the void. The normal method of cleaning is to use a high-pressure air hose, but a wire brush or other method may be used. Typically, a grinder or router is used to smooth the walls of the crack, and it may be necessary to enlarge the crack slightly for uniformity. The contractor will then introduce a material into the void; the filler may extend a short distance onto the surrounding pavement, or it may be confined within the crack.
