Shot blasting is the leading method used to prepare a concrete floor to accept new paints or coatings. It is clean, accurate, fast, and comparatively inexpensive.
The process uses a machine that shoots small steel pellets or beads onto the concrete. These pellets blast away coatings, paints, and stains that may be present. By removing the dirt, gunk, and existing surface coatings, the new paint or coating will perform better.
Shot blasting produces virtually no dust, which is a major advantage in an enclosed space. Most of the steel pellets are recovered by the machine and reused throughout the procedure and beyond, and machines are typically equipped with vacuums to pick up the pulverized materials as they go, making the process kinder to the environment and facilitating cleanup efforts. Shot blasting helps ensure that paints and markings applied to the concrete floor will have superior adherence, resulting in significantly less flaking or popping of the paint. Unlike methods that require chemicals or substantial amounts of water, shot blasting typically allows paint to be applied the same day. Furthermore, shot blasting can be used in most areas that are deemed thermally sensitive, including food preparation and storage areas, equipment rooms, and pharmaceutical warehouses.
Most people understand that paint will have trouble adhering to a dirty surface. However, a surface that is excessively smooth can also lead to poor results. If you examine the strips and pieces of paint that have popped, flaked, or peeled from a warehouse floor, you will normally find that the surface of the paint that was on the concrete is surprisingly clean and smooth. The paint did not adhere properly, so it was more or less just resting on the concrete until it was clipped or dislodged by forklifts or even pedestrians. Shot blasting can roughen the surface to help the paint adhere properly.
One of the benefits of shot blasting is that the procedure only removes a microlayer of material, and that can sometimes be considered a disadvantage. If stains have soaked deep into the concrete, shot blasting may not remove them completely. Depending on the machine, shot blasting may only reach to within a quarter of an inch or so of walls or other perpendicular structures, so these edges may need to be handled differently if they are an issue.
